Behind Closed Doors
Is one of the main reasons that we are doing so well is that the games are being played behind closed doors?

The pressure must surely be off of the players a lot more without the fans being there.

I was not a Moyes fan at all, and certainly not a fan of the board, but the squad and Moyes having the chance to do it without 30,000 fans and 30,000 baying day trippers there must be helping them?

What I feel it does prove is that as fans we have to get back to ways of getting behind the team for those 90 mins, sing their names, come up with the good old days songs and have the place rocking like it can, i.e. spurs in the Leicester season and Chelsea cup, and find another way to focus the negativity towards the board in different ways than match days.

Imagine if we were all there now what extra 2%we could be putting on the team in games like Liverpool, you never know what extra it could give us.

Or is it that the players are under less pressure in not having to perform in front of 60,000 people?

Either way it will be interesting to see how it goes when we all start getting back in

It's no surprise since the return last September, we've been impressive consistently, with the odd shitter in there along the way.

Now, I think having fans back during this really good run wouldn't be harmful at all, and if we'd have had fans in the ground against Liverpool things might have been totally different.

Imagine if we never get to see Lingard play in C&B due to being a loan and spectator situation staying as is for rest of the Season?

Re: Behind Closed Doors
I hate to say it but covid has been very beneficial to us.

Having no crowds makes us play with more freedom. I would hazard a guess that if a league table of all matches played since March was produced we would be right up there.

Re: Behind Closed Doors
We just have a better team now.

We have still been average at home. Since no fans (at home) we have:

Lost to Burnley, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Liverpool, Wolves

Drawn to Aston Villa, Manchester City, Crystal Palace & Brighton.

The 2 wins this season vs Aston Villa & Fulham were scraped too.

Yes, it's always been us fans' fault for us always being shit. Now we know.

Re: Behind Closed Doors
I do think the players have been able to bond better in their bubble and without very little direct vocal criticism on the day. It's like they are stuck together so are trying to make the best of a shit situation. I do also think some players crave the crowd presence back as it can drive them on whilst others are self motivated to want to play well regardless of who's around.

Just an opinion.....

Re: Behind Closed Doors
There could be something behind the ability to play under pressure - just general being watched and shouted at type pressure - that is not there at the moment meaning players that perform well in training but crumble in front of a crowd or play well in lower attended games but go quiet on the big games are not getting impacted as much.

A bit of a levelling of the pressure which is allowing players to be more comfortable.

I don't think it's a home or away thing to be honest.

Re: Behind Closed Doors
Have said this for a while.

Our fan base can be one of the worst for getting toxic very quick.

One of the reasons I jacked the ST in when we moved to the cesspit. Seemed to be no matter who we played if we went 1-0 down the boo boys would be out in force. Alot of booing went on at UP but it seemed to have gotten worse. People venting their frustration at the owners and the stadium towards the players.

Never known what it has gained apart from making the player confidence dip even more and the chance of a win even less likely

I'd like to see the stats of Premier league away wins against home wins this season.
Every match in the Premier league last night was an away win

Re: Behind Closed Doors
I just think we have made some very good signings and they are all grafters with the right attitude.
Could be other teams are missing and need their fans more than our team.
Liverpool aside, our team don’t need no uplift from the fans, they are playing for themselves and the manager.

Re: Behind Closed Doors
If having no fans is why we’ve been doing so well, why did we do so shit vs Liverpool?

Alvin Martin is one example of a player who was one of our best, and played in some of our best ever seasons. He fondly remembers the West Ham fans back in the good old days, how they would get right behind you when you’re putting the effort in, and how they would give you a really hard time if you weren’t.

Our form is down to the manager and his staff and his new additions to the squad, and how all of them have got a tune out of a lot of the players that were already here.

The way we play now would have our fans off their seats and being the 12th man we’ve always been, when the players represent our emotions for the crossed hammers.

Re: Behind Closed Doors
So many of our so called supporters merely go over to the stadium to bitch, moan and abuse the players. Of course that has a negative effect on the players. They have played with so much more freedom since lockdown and with no supporters present at games.

Lily Hammer 6:11 Thu Feb 4
Re: Behind Closed Doors
There’s so often been a lot to bitch and moan about these last few years, and plenty of times before that, over the last half century. We’ve always abused players not putting a shift in, or who are consistently and continuously shit, but even the shit ones usually got some support if we thought they were trying their best.

If players are too thin skinned to take criticism where it’s due, they’ve no business being professional footballers, and certainly not West Ham players.

Our current team, the way they are playing, would be getting world class support if we were in there now.

Re: Behind Closed Doors
i dont know anyone who pays money to go to west ham just so they can slag off the team.

we have one of, if not the, most loyal fan base around who turn up in huge numbers home & away despite some of the rubbish served up over the years.

and now we're blaming the fans for poor home form?
i'm sure the promotion seasons and top half finishes must have been a fluke with fans in the ground?

Re: Behind Closed Doors
Having no fans has helped Moyes, in his first full season at West Ham, to build a team and team spirit without pressure from the crowd for instant results.
